Everyday is a fashion show, and the world is the runway. – Coco Chanel

Couve Couture 2015 at Providence Academy

I took my mama to the Couve Couture fashion show a few weeks ago. I was particularly excited for this show since it was being held in a facility my organization now owns and for which I have some management responsibility.

We had a blast and the historic building was a fantastic backdrop for the diverse showing of designers inspired by several different eras of fashion.

Dress shabbily and they remember the dress. Dress impeccably and they remember the woman. – Coco Chanel

Unfortunately, not all the designers that showed at Couve Couture actually know how to sew impeccably… Many of the designs suffered as a result of poor model fittings and even worse alterations. Safety pins should never be visible when used to make a last minute tuck; zippers need to meet at the top; bosoms should be taped up if the model does not wear a bra; and for goodness sake, raw hems are never a style choice – that’s just lazy!

These head pieces made of felt were very interesting. While not quite my style, it would have been more interesting to see them shown paired with a designer with better sewing skills. I was so distracted by the poor craftsmanship!

It wasn’t all poor quality – most of the designs were very interesting and theatrical. I look forward to many more Couve Coutures in the future – hopefully with more “couture” in the shows!
